1850-70 TAHAN Paris French Tea Chest Caddy Box Mahogany & Brass. Fine Ebonized mahogany wood with fine Brass inlay and trim - a repeating rosette pattern up top.
Lock up front, original key and carved bone tag are retained. The key tag is inscribed by hand in ink - "Tea Chest".
Two separate compartments in side, each lidded with Mahogany lids, turned finial handles. An original tea pat is also retained. Signed inside, on the brass lock mechanism - TAHAN / PARIS - etched by hand in capital block letters. In 1849, he started his furniture studio at 30 Rue de la Paix in the center of Paris, France.His work quickly grew to high regard - for it's strong style and very fine execution. His manufacture included smaller furniture pieces and chests and boxes, such as this one. Empress Eugene learned of Tahan's work quality, and he soon became the official cabinetmaker to Emperor Napoleon III. His pieces also received universal acclaim throughout Europe, winning medal prizes and awards from various expositions.
They were (and still are) in high demand throughout the continent, Britain and America. French in origin, circa 1850's-70's.
