Depicting a distinguished french Gentleman possible Navel or militarily seated in portrait style, this piece is from the French school dating from 1819 when the subject 51 years old.The quality of the brush strokes and detail of this painting is simply stunning signifying that the subjects family were from the upper classes of French society as it transitioned out of the napoleonic era and in to the long 19th century. Oh if paintings could speak... Inscription on the rear in French reads (from what can be made out) roughly master... Rousse, son of Alexis and Madeleine Rouilan married name De Ruse... Born location unreadable on 8th month.... Signed lower centre by the artist upon its completion in 1819. Overall The piece is in fantastic condition considering it is 200 years old this year, there are small marks and losses as would be expected of a piece of this age.
