C French Religieuse mantel or bracket clock. The case is later 17. C but the movement has been replaced in the 19.C with a standard French spring driven movement. The gilt brass chapter, ring hands and dial ornament appear to be original but the dial back plate is replaced, presumably at the same tiume as the movement. Ebonised pear wood veneered case with inlaid brass lines. Nice old polished surface to the case. Typical velvet backed dial with gilt brass dial furniture of typical Religieuse type.
Fine quality dial ornament depicting Apollo (Sun god) driving his sun chariot across the sky. The nicely engraved chapter ring has each minute marked. Old very dark blue velvet applied to backplate.
Fine engraved and pierced parsley type gilt brass hands. Later 8 day countwheel striking French spring driven movement striking the hours and a single stroke on the half hours. The clock is in full working order and keeps good time.
Steel winding key is included. At the top of the images below I have included 2 short videos to show you how the clock runs and how it sounds when it strikes the hour. Please allow the videos load before playing them through. The clock case is in good condition with no damage. The movement is in reasonably clean condition and in good working order.
