Fine Late French 19th Century Mantle Clock Retailed By W. Johnson & Sons
Fine Late French 19th Century Ornate Boulle Work Mantle Clock Retailed By W. This is a very ornate example of a late 19th century mantle clock. This was retailed by W. Johnson & Sons of 54 Threadneedle Street in East London, though the movement is French. The clock is made of a dark hardwood case covered in red boulle work and polished brass with flowing floral patterns. The finial is a cherub holding a container. On both sides there are a classical womans face with an ornate headdress decoration. The lower front of the case is glass so the movement is visible and the inside of the back door is decorated with the same patterns and shell. The clock face is brushed gilt brass with white and blue enameled Roman numerals, there are also Arabic numerals hidden behind the frame of the glass cover. The movement is stamped MADE FOR W. JOHNSON & SON, 54 THREADNEEDLE STREET, LONDON and 40612, PARIS, Ch Vcne.
This clock comes with its original pendulum and winding lever. The clock stands 16 inches (41 cm) tall. The clock is 8 ½ inches (21 ½ cm) wide.
The clock is 6 ½ (16 ½ cm) inches deep. The clock weighs 4.24 Kg. The clock is in a excellent overall condition for its age. There is one foot that is somewhat loose and has a modern steel pin rather than a period brass one.
There are some cosmetic scuffs to the turtleshell. The finial is has some play in it.
The clock keeps good time. For further details and condition see pictures below... The item "Fine Late French 19th Century Mantle Clock Retailed By W.
