A fine antique french violin made by Jean-Laurent Mast circa 1770. Beautiful antique french master violin made by Jean-Laurent Mast in Paris or Mirecourt circa 1770. The top is made of two parts of spruce, and shows regular and very thin grain lines.
The back is made of two pieces of highly flamed maple, the curl descending from the center joint. The ribs, neck and head are of plain maple wood.The violin is covered with a brown varnish on a luminous golden ground. The purfling is very regular, and ends nicely with bee stings on corners. The violin is close in style to the ones of Nicolas Augustin Chappuy, working in Paris at the same time.
The violin is in a good immediate playing condition, with several repairs to the top (none to sound post), a restored joint on the back (with a towel inside), and a little chip on the scroll. The instrument is fire branded two times J. Mast à Paris, once under the button of the neck, and once on the inside back. The violin is certified 100% authentic. We can propose an illustrated certificate describing the instrument, just ask for it.The violin has been entirely revised and set-up, including a new set of Thomastik Dominant strings, a Despiau bridge, a new tailpiece and a new chinrest. The instrument comes with a new rectangular case of quality.
