The etching is titled "Bretonischer Hafen" Breton is a location in France. The etching measures by plate size only 9 5/8 inches high by 12 1/2 inches across. The total paper size comes to 17 3/4 inches by 22 inches. The work is not hand signed.

The artist's name appears in the plate in the lower right corner noted later, in another hand is a date of 1902 in the lower left in pencil. It was made from the artist's original plate for the publication Verlag Der Gesellschaft fur Vervielfautigende Kunst. Which translates as the Society for Duplicating Arts. It was a limited edition portfolio printed annually in Vienna , Austria between 1871 and 1934. The publication featured original artworks including etchings , woodblocks and lithographs by some of the most famous artists of the day.

These works of art were made aside from the small hand signed and numbered pieces that the artists produced for their own personal use. We do not know how many of these portfolios were made each year but we don't think a lot of them have survived over the years. This piece dates from about , we think 1906 to 1909 but the original etching plate may have been created in 1902 as noted in the pencil writing lower left. The work is in overall good shape. The etching image is clean and the colors are still nice and bright.

There is no foxing (tiny brownish orange spot). The lower left corner is missing a bit of paper and there are two tiny 1/4 inch tears to the paper.

There is some very faint / pal light toning even over the paper which has caused the paper to become a very light tan color but the paper is still nice and strong. The work is not glued down. Richard Ranft is listed in the published book Davenports Art Reference and Price Guide.
