A very fine and impressively large earlier 18. Century French Comtoise type wall clock. Beautiful gilded cast brass and enamel cartouche dial set on forged iron backplate. The dial is completely original to the movement.
Pierced brass fret over the dial. Hinged brass winding keyhole covers. Extraordinarily well made 8 day duration movement with high count wheel trains and very substantial iron posted frame. Very distinctive unwarned rack striking sounding the hours with true repeating facilitated by lever on the rack hook arbour.
Half hours sounded as a single stroke with a second hammer. Inverted verge escapement with long pallet.
The original pendulum (missing) would have been about 40 or so inches long. Some people prefer the dial without the alarm disc attached so I have shown it this way also. It is very easy to remove and re-attach the disc on this clock. At the top of the images below I have included A short video to give you an idea of how the strike mechanism runs. Please allow the video to load before playing it through. The movement is in very good condition.
The movement is reasonably clean but a little tarnished and dusty with only very superficial rusting to the steelwork. Virtually no wear to the pinions and the escapement pallets.
The wheel trains run smoothly when pressure is applied to them. The escapement functions correctly with very little'drop. The alarm disc cam has been recently restored. The one side door is a leter replacement, the other is missing. No pendulum or drive cords.Overall height of movement to top of fret 37.8 cm (14 7/8). Height iron dial plate 26.5 cm (10 3/8). Width dial plate 24 cm (9 1/2). Enamel dial diameter 22 cm (8 5/8). Overall depth clock tip hands stud to back of pendulum suspension chimney 17.5 cm (6 7/8).
Plates 15.8 cm /(6 1/4) deep x 24 cm (9 3/8) wide. Iron posts 1.2 cm square section. Packed weight 11.8 kg. 63 x 43 x 33 cm.
