Academy Fine Paintings is an international fine art dealership based in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England.
We specialise in 19th century British and early 20th century Post-Impressionist oil paintings by some of the most important artists of the period. My name is Gavin Claxton and in addition to being an art dealer I now also work as an antiques and fine art expert on BBC television. Clients should always bear in mind that the vast majority of paintings we deal in are antiques - works over 100 years old and frequently much older and will therefore invariably retain some evidence of aging, historical damage and repair. During its lifetime a 150-year old oil painting may well have been exposed to extremes of heat or cold, intrusion of water, bumps, cuts and natural age-related deterioration, all of which require restoration. When a listing's heading reads'by' and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist. When the term'signed by' is used, in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist. When the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part. When the expression'circle of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence. When the expression'follower of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil.
When the expression'manner of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date. When the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or imitation (of any date) of a work by the artist. When the term'bears signature' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist. Great care and much time is taken over the safe transportation of the paintings we sell. No second-hand bubble-wrap and reused cardboards boxes here!

Its ironic that 99.9% of the worlds fine art is owned by the wealthiest 0.01% of the population when so many of the artists who created it lived and died in relative poverty. The fact is that the art world, especially in times of global recession, thrives on inequality. But whilst the possibility of purchasing works by Leighton, Holman Hunt, Constable, and Turner is always going to be the preserve of the super-rich it has never been a better time to invest in works by their contemporaries.
